EP1 Red The Ugly Duckling Story Map (June 2017)

Dear ep1 red VCIS parents and guardians,

Very recently the children of ep1 red here at Varee Chiangmai International School produced beautiful story maps of their current reading book The Ugly Ducking.

The children were given 6 random sentences from their reading book which were displayed on the interactive whiteboard.

The children then had to find the correct order in which the sentences occurred and write them into their story maps and then draw the appropriate illustrations.

Finally the children went on to colour their drawings.

Most of the children were able to do this activity.

For those children who did not get it right their first time, will get better at it in the future.

The key I feel to young learners esl activities is repeated attempts at similar if not the same activities.

This activity can be made more challenging by adding more random sentences from the book in question and by in turn adding more boxes to the worksheet.

As the children progress on wards through their first year of learning on the English Programme, I am certain that you will see at first hand, great improvements in their English language ability and fluency.

EP1 Red Classroom Things Barrier Game (June 2017)

This is only week 5 for the children of ep1 red here at Varee Chiangmai International School.

The vast majority of the children in ep1 red have had very little English language exposure, to the extent that most up until very recently were completely unfamiliar with the alphabet, phonics and basic classroom language and basic classroom instruction.

This particular esl activity is referred to as a Barrier Game. A barrier game is usually a pair based activity where one pupil obtains information from the other by asking questions and the other pupil gives information by answering questions.

Another way to use a barrier game is to give instructions to one another. This is the methodology which is applied in this version of the activity.





Barrier games are usually carried out as an educational activity when the pupils have learned all of the various elements of a particular unit of learning. In this case the children have completed their unit on Classroom Things, Colours and Question Words.

This barrier game activity accommodates for children of varying abilities by way of differentiation and providing specific scaffolding.

Lower level children are given a worksheet which has the colour words printed in colour. The classroom objects are also displayed on the interactive whiteboard with the object names underneath them.

This activity may seem very fluid however it has taken weeks for the children to get to such a level so as to become confident enough to execute this game successfully.

My name is Teacher Chaz

I am the English Programme first grade teacher for EP1 Red, here at Varee Chiangmai International School.

I have worked at Varee Chiangmai International School for over 8 years now.

I started working at Varee Chiangmai International School within the Kindergarten department where I was a teacher, for in excess of 2 years.

Many parents will already be familiar with me because I would have taught their child before.

I will soon be embarking upon my seventh consecutive year, teaching as an English programme homeroom teacher.

My passion is the English language, English Literature and especially Creative Writing.

I am an interdisciplinary educator who facilitates my pupils to make their own connections between all the subjects I teach.  


I teach English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Career and Technology, Information Technology and Art to the same class of children.

My pedagogical ethos has always been to create stimulating lessons which, not only hold the interest of the children I teach but also empower them with confidence, so that they can then carry out tasks as individuals, or in groups with minimal guidance.


I constantly engage my pupils in a variety of different ways and to achieve this I avoid the over reliance on a single ‘learning theory’ or indeed teaching approach, as I sincerely believe I would be restricting their educational development by doing so.

Most of the children who enter into ep1 red, begin with no English language knowledge or ability whatsoever. This includes being unfamiliar with the alphabet and basic phonics.

I am extremely familiar with the University of Cambridge Young Learners ESOL examinations, for which I have successfully prepared my past pupils for, and whom have achieved outstanding success.

(These assessments were carried out by an external team of Cambridge ESOL examiners.)


I am exceptionally proud of my pupils, whom have achieved so highly in the Cambridge English Young Learners Assessments.



‘To be able to teach my pupils to a globally recognised standard and for them to achieve so highly in these assessments, has been one of the many high points of my teaching career!!!’



I will always do my very best to ensure that my students continue to learn English in fun and varied ways.
